Each section of the spine has different characteristics that play a role in how we are designed to move. The vertebrae of the cervical spine (neck) are much smaller and finer than the vertebrae of the lumbar (lower back) spine. The cervical vertebrae carry the weight of the head, whereas the lumbar spine supports the entirety of the torso above. The thoracic spine (mid/rib section) serves as protection for our most important organs.
